Lindsey checked her watch as the helicopter took to the sky. Their flight out to Utah would be just under a couple hours. They soared high above the tree-covered mountains, and over the snow-capped peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park. Sunlight glistened off the alpine lakes and rivers winding between the trees.

It was beautiful up here, but Lindsey felt dread rising in her chest. She glanced over at Raven settled into one of the four black bucket seats. He was across from her with Creek at his boots. She handed him a headset, and Raven placed it over his long hair.

Besides him, she had brought two of her most trusted and talented Rangers. Both wore the standard khaki fatigues of the Colorado Rangers, helmets, and body armor. They each carried suppressed M4s for this mission.

“This is Larry Yoon,” she said, indicating a shorter man with a thin black mustache. His arms were roped with thick muscle, and he had a bulldog face.

He gave Raven a sly grin that Lindsey only recognized because she was used to seeing it. Most people would have considered it a scowl.

“And Juan Molina,” Lindsey said.

Molina was younger than Yoon, but his youthful face didn’t make him seem any less formidable. He had a goatee that bristled when he eyed Raven.

“Good to meet you,” Molina said, stretching out a hand to Raven.

Raven shook it. “You guys too.”

Then he looked over at Lindsey.

“You’re coming with?” he asked.

“At least for the start.”

“Got to say I’m a little surprised you aren’t back at Fort Golden.”

“I wanted to help,” she said. “Plus, we want our best trackers on the job. You’re one of them.”

“What’s that have to do with you coming?”

“I needed you on this job. If I didn’t come personally to ask you, would you have gone?”

Raven didn’t answer her. He didn’t need to.

She could see the look in his eyes, and she had seen his sister’s expression when the chopper landed at his cabin.

Coming to him in person, he couldn’t so easily turn her down. Maybe she was taking advantage of their relationship, and that certainly wasn’t fair. But fair didn’t matter in the New Frontier. Fair wasn’t part of the vocabulary in the Wild West. There was only victory or failure.

She had a job to protect the people of Colorado, to find the people responsible for the Angel Line attack, and she needed Raven to help her accomplish this mission.

“Okay, here’s what I’ve pieced together,” Lindsey said. “The Angel Line was attacked well outside of Salt Lake City, though we’re not exactly sure of the location. We have only a rough idea based on their route and the time they went dark.

“We do know the Utah Scouts had a small group watching for the train’s arrival. However, their team has also gone dark. They’re assumed to be either captured or KIA. My counterpart in Salt Lake City has insisted they won’t spare any more men until the area is deemed safe.”

Lindsey took a deep breath.

“Like I mentioned, Raven, the train has almost certainly completely derailed.
